“It Could Have Been Said!”—On the Dialogical Space Between Machery and Deleuze433-448

摘要:This paper aims to parallelize the theorizations of Pierre Macherey and Gilles Deleuze.First, the author, according to Macherey, must have left something unsaid in his text. The unsaid or the narrative rupture is responsible for the multiplicity of the voices in the text, enabling the text to exist.Above all,Macherey argues that the unsaid or the narrative rupture emerges from how the author chooses to represent ideology. That is,Macherey’s so-called unsaid or narrative rupture is actually what the author could have said;it is in fact a potentiality embedded in the text.On the other hand, when postulating his virtual(ity)/actual(ity)couplet,Deleuze asserts that the virtual(ity)is actually a potentiality that can be tapped. To be more precise, the virtual(ity)has its own reality, and once actualized,it will be transformed into something entirely new and different. Here, the dialogical space between Macherey and Deleuze is plain to see:Macherey’s so-called unsaid or narrative rupture is literally Deleuze’s so-called virtuality. When the unsaid is said,a virtuality is actualized. And a potentiality is thus tapped.By such a reading strategy,we readers are presented with an enactment of an alternative case scenario of the text, namely, how the text could have been made over.In the end,an example of this reading strategy is provided:Macherey argues that Marquis de Sade’s desire-ruled society is more oppressive. What de Sade has left unsaid is the problematic relationship between desire and oppression. And it is exactly the potentiality in his works.

The Global Circular Diaspora With Time as the Center in Modiano’s In the Caféof Lost Youth449-454

摘要:The 2014 Nobel Prize winner in literature,Patrick Modiano,in his masterpiece,In the Caféof Lost Youth, describes the story of Louki,a young mysterious lady who has been making time-travelling diaspora in all her life. This thesis makes deep analysis by making use of temporal relationship—the fragmentation of the past, the hopeless pursuit from the present to the future, and the confusion of time, revealing that the essence of life is the intertwining of reality and illusion, the confusion of pain and happiness, the ambiguity of survival and death.Furthermore,it also argues that, the story of the heroine Louki, who, like most other human beings,is living like“drifting duckweed and floating clouds”within the global circular diaspora with time as the center.

Alienation and Existential Predicaments of Clones:Interpreting Never Let Me Go in the Context of Posthumanism455-463

摘要:The literary background of Kazuo Ishiguro’s novel Never Let Me Go sets in a highly developed scientific and technological world where clones are created by human and“educated”in the Hailsham School for the sake of“donating”their vital organs to human three or four times before death.By depicting miserable fate of clones, the novel conveys deep concerns on the consequences of abusing technology in modern society.Ever since the burgeoning development of life science and artificial intelligence in the 1990s,the trend of posthumanism/transhumanism has emerged.Posthumanism promotes approaches to enhancing human body condition and organism, and extending human lifespan to augment human capacity and well-being by the advancement of technology. In literary field, contemplation on the relationship between human beings and technology has become a major concern of posthumanism.Putting Never Let Me Go in the context of posthumanism, this essay probes into the significant themes of the novel from three aspects:(1)clones’torments in the existential predicaments imposed by human;(2)human’s violation to the principles of bioethics causing the existential predicaments of alienated clones;(3)appealing to human to ruminate on the relationship between scientific technology and ethics.

A Pragmatic-Stylistic Analysis of Fictional Dialogues in Kazuo Ishiguro’s Short Story“Come Rain or Come Shine”464-472

摘要:This study investigates the applicability and effectiveness of pragmatic-stylistic analysis in fictional dialogues.Taking Kazuo Ishiguro’s short story“Come Rain or Come Shine”in Nocturnes:Five Stories of Music and Nightfall as a case study,a detailed analysis of four fictional dialogues in this story has been conducted in the light of the cooperative principle, the im/politeness theory, and the turn-taking theory. The study has shown that pragmatic-stylistics offers a useful analytical tool in guiding readers to stylistically read character speech forms and interpret textual cues in conversation so as to gain a better insight into the characters’traits, their power relationships as well as the acceleration and deceleration in the narrative development.

A Comparative Study on the Two Chinese Versions of The Apple Tree by John Galsworthy473-478

摘要:The author establishes parallel corpus of The Apple Tree by John Galsworthy and two translated Chinese versions by Huang Zixiang and Dong Hengxun.Wordsmith and ICTCLAS are applied to make a quantitative study on the linguistic features of the source and the target language.A comparative study is made on the translation skills and styles of the two Chinese versions.Translation samples are analyzed and appreciated. It is concluded that the form and the literal meaning of the source language is retained more in Huang’s version while the implied meaning is conveyed more in Dong’s version, with more standard, fluent, and natural Chinese and more flexible sentence structures. The socio-cultural contexts of the two translators are also considered in analyzing their styles and translation choices.

Critique of the Cruelty of the Iraq War:The Symbolism in Kevin Power’s The Yellow Birds479-487

摘要:The Yellow Birds novel is written by the American writer Kevin Powers who is an Iraq War veteran. In this novel,he presented his memories and terrible experiment during his service. The novel has been acclaimed as one of the best contemporary novels on war,not only for its literary value but also for its boldness to reveal America’s role in spreading destruction in the world since its inception. One of the novel’s striking features is that the American soldier is not depicted as a hero who came to save Iraqi people from a tyrant and to bring democracy on a dish of gold, but as a human being divided between death and survival.Powers uses many different symbols to express his convictions and ideas.Symbolism is a very important instrument in the formation of the story. He used symbols to accentuate the meaning of a story and explain certain actions of a character,as a major tool to improve the personality of his characters,to represent different themes and set up events. Therefore, the main concern of this paper is to identify the major symbols that Powers has used in this novel and elucidate on their significance.

Historical Writing of the Battle of Sarhu and the Imperial Propaganda of Qianlong488-492

摘要:The Battle of Sarhu,a series of battles between the Late Jin Dynasty(later known as the Qing Dynasty)and the Ming Dynasty in 1619,was described as a symbol for the rising of the Late Jin Dynasty by the historical narratives of Qing Dynasty. But indifferent Qing Dynasty emperors’historical narratives about the Battle of Sarhu, they had different emphases on their narratives.By comparing the historical narratives of the Qing TaiZu Huang Di Shi Lu and Kang Xi’s historical narrative the Qing Tai ZuGao Huang Di Shi Lu,the paper explores Qianlong’s political appeal for protecting legitimacy and ordering the monarch-subject relationship,as well as cautioning to the Eight Banners through the text selection, text structure, and the text content of Sarhu Zhi Zhan Shu Shi.

Gender as Site of Power Enactment in The Power of Um and The Reign of Wazobia497-509

摘要:This study discusses how Liking(1996)in The Power of Um and Onwueme(1992)in The Reign of Wazobia anchor complex negotiations of public and private identities on gender as a site of enactments of power.Through experimentation with dramatic techniques, the selected Cameroonian and Nigerian women playwrights emphasize the centrality of gender as a site for a sustained critique of the larger social formations. The paper hypothesizes that Liking’s and Onwueme’s plays are thematically ambitious and stylistically experimental demonstrating a dynamic process through which the dramatists integrate concrete experiences into their creative consciousness in gender-conscious ways.In that respect, gender stands out as the performance space of struggle between the performance of power to maintain hegemony and the power of performance for social change. For scientific vigour, the study uses the gender relations approach to demonstrate how the playwrights appropriate the dynamics of performance to translate, interpret and challenge deeply ingrained patriarchal paradigms and also to explain, theorize and account for the complex realities of African women’s lives.

The Usages of“Ji(几)”in Yulin Dialect513-518

摘要:In Yulin dialect, there are three usages of“ji(几)”:interrogative pronouns, numerals, and degree adverbs. When used as an interrogative pronoun,it is generally used to inquire about the number and degree where the inquiry number is generally small, but the number can be large when it is used in asking about age. When used as a number,it can represent not only integers between one and ten,but also decimal part. When used as a degree adverb, there are rich syntactic formats such as“ji(几)+verb”,“ji(几)+adjective”,different formats indicating different meanings.Compared with Mandarin, the usage of Yulin dialect“ji(几)”is more diverse. We also analyze the use of“ji(几)”from a diachronic perspective and finally we propose that due to the reanalysis of the syntactic format and the change of semantics, the“ji(几)”is further grammaticalized from interrogative pronoun to degree adverb.
