摘要:This paper addresses the narrative construction of the moment of death as depicted in Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina and in Barnes’s The Sense of an Ending. Following Orr’s definition of positive influence, described as a “site for cultural renewal”, it pursues the analysis of complexity and confluence of literary traditions in these texts. Though both Anna Karenina and The Sense of an Ending seem to insist on portraying a chronicle of struggle between a moment and a process of dying, it is nevertheless a physical moment of life ending which becomes an intensely condensed, and almost photographic, representation of the intimate, psychologically depicted, dying process. It is argued that the moment of death reveals, for instance, Anna’s unresolved internal conflict between psychological and physiological phenomena shaping human behaviour. Similarly, Barnes’s The Sense of an Ending builds upon a subtle dialogic tension between a process of psychological dying and a moment of physically conceived death. Specifically, this paper brings to light the repetitive occurence of the intense epiphanic moments which shape the thematic and the structural development of both Anna Karenina and The Sense of an Ending.
摘要:The analysis of women’ contribution to Arabic literature brings to light novels written by Arab women novelists whose writings reflect the intricate factors restraining women between the tradition and the codes of Islam. The Syrian writer Ulfat Idilbi and the Jordanian novelist Fadia Faqir delineate such entanglment elequently in both Sabriya: Damascus Bitter Sweet and Pillars of Salt. The paper previews some critical opinions namely of: the Egyptian American Professor of Women Studies and Religion, Leila Ahmed;the Moroccan Sociologist and writer, Fatima Mernessi;and the Algerian writer and film maker, Assia Djebar. Through manifesting theses critical views along with the two novels, the paper proposes that much of the gender inequalituy practised in the Arab societies and reflected in the two novels, might be rooted in the tradition, not the religion itself.
摘要:Wallace Stevens is one of five greatest poets in America in 20th century. The relation between imagination and reality is a major theme of his poems. He holds the view that the mission of poets is to build a bridge linking the world of imagination and of reality with the result of deconstructing the logic of binary opposition since the time of Plato. Thirteen Ways of Looking at A Blackbird is a representative poem that expresses Wallace’s thoughts of deconstruction. This article is to probe into how the poet establishes the reality dominated by imagination and then how he deconstructs the binary opposition between imagination and reality since the time of Plato.
摘要:This paper presents an analysis on how objectivity is discursively constructed in journalistic narratives by drawing on the theories of viewpoint and mental space in Cognitive Linguistics. It is posited that at least three mental spaces are projected by a narrative discourse, i.e., a narrated event space, a narrating space, and a basic space, and the distance between the first two spaces determines the degree of objectivity in the narrative discourse. A schema which represents the configuration of the different spaces is proposed and applied in the analysis of journalistic narratives to explore the strategies of objectivity construction. The analysis reveals that what the different journalistic narratives have in common in the construction of objectivity is to distance the narrated event space and the narrating space with the former being foregrounded in the viewpoint arrangement.
摘要:This paper attempts to discuss a possible way of seeking a temporary dwelling place for the soul and keeping a sense of “whereness” in an ever changing world. The study first analyzes the conceptions of “whereness” and still point, proposing the water face as the satisfactory means to achieve it on the basis of analyzing Thoreau’s Walden, then in a comparative way this paper examines several texts concerning the experiences and representations of physical and spiritual contacts with running water like rivers or still water like lakes, among which the texts concerning the English lakes are given main attentions. The study finds that the preferable mode of experiencing and representing lake denotes the universality and should be adopted more.
摘要:The Analects, Mengzi and Xunzi are the top-three classical works of pre-Qin Confucianism, which epitomized thoughts and ideas of Confucius, Mencius and XunKuang1. There have been lots of spirited and in-depth discussions on their ideological inheritance and development from all kinds of academics. This paper tries to cast a new light on these discussions through “machine reading2”.
摘要:This study explores some complex issues of drama translation-whether it should be treated as literary translation or not-by investigating two English translations of the same canonic Chinese drama, Xixiang ji. One translation claims to be literature piece while the other, stage-script. In comparing the two of different function and discussing their specific divergent expressions, this paper intends to shed some light on drama translation. It examines the translators’ purpose that closely links to their translation strategy and the function of their translation, followed by sample translations of courting passages. It illuminates the relative strength and weakness of drama translation as literature and as stage-script.
摘要:Chunks, as fixed or semi-fixed structures, are the unity of grammar, semantics, and context which play an important role in the process of language comprehension and generation. This paper gives a brief introduction to the definition and classification of chunks, and makes an in-depth analysis of the use of chunks in 95 Chinese EFL learners’ compositions on the basis of the classification of chunks by Nattinger and DeCarrico. For the incorrect chunks in the compositions, this paper makes qualitative analysis and classifies them into redundancy, avoidance, tense, mixing, and chunks creation. According to the analysis, four suggestions on chunks teaching are put forward in order to explore effective measures to promote chunks teaching and help language learners improve their practical application ability of English.
摘要:This article attempts to explore the possibility that Jesus was a homosexual by referring to studies made by psychiatrists as well as to Biblical sources. For over a century various psychiatrists have thought that Jesus was a paranoid schizophrenic and we now know that the most frequent cause of schizophrenia is the repression of homosexuality. The Gospel of John has two passages that seem to confirm the hypothesis that Jesus was homosexual.
摘要:This paper takes the C-E translation of product introductory texts on official websites of three mobile phone makers as the study object under the Skopos theory, with an aim to identify and analyze the distinctive translation features of such special type of text. The exhausted parse and analysis bring out the findings that there exists a significant translation difference between the Chinese and English-version product introductory texts on official websites. It is found that Chinese introductory texts are more inclined to rely on exquisite words and redundant expressions to describe products’ features and functions, while switching to the corresponding English version, simple vocabularies and compact sentence structure are more frequent. Hereafter, this paper raises two practical guidelines to instruct translation activities in business contexts.
摘要:In the 21st century, soft power has become an important element to evaluate a nation’s comprehensive strength. Meanwhile, as an indispensable part of soft power, national image receives more and more attention on the political stage. Since Chinese President Xi Jinping’s speeches have unique features and greatly reflect positive national images of China, many scholars start to analyze them from diversified perspectives. Based on Du Bois’ theory of “the Stance Triangle” and the Indexicality Principle, taking President Xi Jinping’s speech at the opening ceremony of the Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation for example, this paper expounds how President Xi achieves the evaluation, position, and alignment between the subject and object by means of overt labeling, implicature and presupposition, covert evaluation statement, and ideology-laden linguistic structure, in order to establish China’s national image. Through the analysis, the author intends to figure out how national leaders use various persuasive methods to achieve their political purpose. And the author hopes this thesis can provide a new perspective for further analysis on national leaders’ speeches.
摘要:Shaw Brothers (Hong Kong) Limited and its films have a wide range of influence around the world. In the contemporary era, the communication of the Shaw costume films, emphasises the humanity’s classical appeal and invisible revival motivation. Also, it puts great emphasis on the trend from heroic monologue to discourse equality. The essay focuses on the aesthetic style and cultural connotation of the costume swordsman martial arts films directed by Zhang Che and Chu Yuan, revealing how the combination of the cultural psychology and Shaw’s management model have jointly accomplished Shaw’s films’ glorious time for decades in Hong Kong. Furthermore, it proves that how the cultural mentality of the martial arts “King of the Forerunner” has affected the transformation and development of Shaw Brothers, and how the status of costume martial arts films were changed in contemporary communication.
