18th-century British Women Poets’ Patriotic Voices1619-1634

摘要:Right from the beginning to the end of the 18th-century,a large number of British women poets stepped out as outright and eloquent patriots.Through celebration,persuasion,and protest with their poems,18th-century British women poets voiced out their patriotism,especially in their promotion of the British national identity by building up national confidence,constructing national ideals,and bringing the national ideals closer together with the actual practices during national crises in the War of American Independence,anti-slavery activism,and the French Revolution.The majority of their patriotic poems got published in the 18th-century.Their patriotic voices,especially those of their vigorous construction of the British national identity,have been largely neglected and therefore should be fully acknowledged since that identity they helped to promote remains a key issue for the British even today.

Seeing Returned Colonials and Poor Whites:Retributive Ghosts in Conan Doyle’s Detective Stories1635-1644

摘要:In Conan Doyle’s detective stories mainly including“The Resident Patient,”“The Gloria Scott,”“The Adventure of Blanched Soldier,”and“The Crooked Man,”featuring the master sleuth character Sherlock Holmes,he depicts the return of the colonials from British colonies,mostly India,with physically deformed or ravaged body and traumatic past that haunt and trouble his characters’present life.Doyle allegorically uses returned colonials or poor whites who turn into figures of retributive ghosts that function as pathetic memories and inner fears from British colonies.The seeing of ghostly figures and haunting past events delineated in these stories cause characters’sense of uncanny horror and remind them of their past trauma.These monstrous returned colonials or poor whites often create a fear and a social menace that must be appropriately dealt with when the master sleuth is commissioned to pin down the truth of client’s cases.Why are these bodies of ghostly figures so“irregular”and ravaged?What do these deformities signify?How can returned colonial’s or poor white’s traumatic past be related to retributive ghost?This paper attempts to probe into these issues in order to find out possible answers.

The Construction of Discourse Authority of the Silent Women—Reading I Stand Here Ironing From the Perspective of Feminist Narratology1645-1652

摘要:I Stand Here Ironing is Tillie Olsen’s first novel of her back to writing after several years’silence.It reflects the real living condition of marginalized women through the description of a daughter by the mother’s memories.Based on Susan S.Lanser’s distinction of three modes of narrative voice in feminist narratology,this paper analyzes three narrative voices in this novel.Olsen employs multiple narrative voices in the novel in order to release the voice of the marginalized women in the silence,she destroys the male’s authority and constructs the discourse authority of silent,poor working-class women.

Reality of the Remote Wilderness―Krakauer’s Into the Wild and the Inner Desert1653-1660

摘要:In Jon Krakauer’s nonfiction writing,Into the Wild(1996),away from the early 1990s’American society filled with products and information,young McCandless headed for the Alaskan Wilderness which was believed as the last frontier.This remote wilderness far beyond several designated wilderness areas in the American West was a destination of his spiritual journey.The image of the wilderness overlaps with the desert in the fourth-century hagiographic literature in terms of solitude,pure and sacred.Although the image of the wilderness is an illusion,harsh experience quite different from daily routine give McCandless a sense of reality.If his purpose of going to wildernesses was searching for“authentic self”through“bodily feelings”(Wang,361),the remote wilderness would be reckoned to have“existential authenticity”(Wang,358)which makes him feel reality.However,when the wilderness experience inspired McCandless to go back home,a sense of reality shifted from the remote wilderness to society.Into the Wild is probably not literature to praise desert solitude,rather,Krakauer focuses on the relative self among people.

Ephraim Cabot’s Puritanism as the Root of His Family Tragedy1661-1668

摘要:On the surface,Desire Under the Elms is a tragedy of the Cabot family which borrows its plot from the ancient Greek tragedy and legend Hippolytus and Medea by Euripides and the Greek myth Oedipus by Sophocles,about lust,incest,Oedipus complex and infanticide,etc.enriched and elevated,however the root of all the tragedies in the family lies in Ephraim Cabot’s Puritanism.

Author,Text,and Reader:Death of the Author and Meaning of the Text1669-1673

摘要:This paper is going to explore Roland Barthes,Michel Foucault and Wolfgang Iser’s theories upon the question,death of the author,from three aspects comparatively:What is the connotation of the author in their understandings respectively?Why is death of the author necessary in modern or postmodern period?What will take the author’s position after its death?Through detailed analysis and comparison of their texts and propositions,this paper attempts to indicate that Barthes advocates that textual meaning is within text itself,dispels author’s conclusiveness on meaning of a text,and suggests the openness and multiplicity of textual meaning.By reexamining the writing subject and redefining the function of author,Foucault indicates that the concept“author”is a function of discourse.He degrades author’s crucial significance in the process of textual interpretation,but keeps author as an existential mode of discourse.Wolfgang Iser states that the meaning of a text generates from the reading process,a dialogue between the text and its reader.Once a literary text is finished,it remains quite and full of potentialities,waiting for reader to unfold itself,waiting to realize itself in reading process.

Cicero's Rhetoric vs.Baumgarten's Aesthetics:A Small Comparison of Decorum of Cicero With Magnitudo of Baumgarten1674-1681

摘要:This paper made a comparison of Cicero’s Rhetoric with Baumgarten’s Aesthetics,for answering the question of how Baumgarten built the system of ars aesthetica on the basis of Cicero’s rhetoric.The paper demonstrated how Baumgarten’s key ideas of pulchritudo and magnitudo were related with Cicero’s decorum and modus concepts.Baumgarten’s magnitudo originated in Cicero’s modus.Baumgarten,however,differentiated the idea pulchritudo from the Cicero’s decorum for approaching the issue of pulchritudo ipsa.

A Deconstructive Analysis of The Great Gatsby1682-1686

摘要:Francis Scott Fitzgerald(1896-1940)is universally recognized as one of the greatest American writers of the 20th century.He is also considered a member of the“Lost Generation”of the 1920s,and with the publication of The Great Gatsby he was catapulted to fame by a night which gives a concrete illustration to the Jazz Age.Taking the novel as a case in point,this paper,based on the theory of deconstruction,seeks to undertake a deconstructive interpretation towards the binary oppositions on which the projects rest—dream and reality,and the past and the present,in order to subvert logos-centrism represented by Gatsby’s disillusionment with his American dream.

摘要:Differences in cultural background and context may result in misunderstanding and various attitudes toward dealing with historical issues,so we need to promote Chinese culture across the globe and explicitly explain China’s development and changes to the international community.It is not only the mission of culture,but also our responsibility.At present,the world is a dynamic mixture of openness,integration,and competition,with cultural competition as its core.Upon the rise of China,spreading Chinese culture overseas has entered a new era.We must put Chinese culture into a new context and understand its characteristics and trends under historical and macro perspectives.

Georgia and Europe in the Early Middle Ages1702-1712

摘要:The article deals with relations of Georgia to Europe in the late antique period and the early Middle Ages.The analyses rests on the Byzantium and the Western European,as well as on Georgian written sources:historical chronicles,hagiographic texts and other information,reflecting political relations of the Iberia and Lazika—those-days kingdoms,located on the territory of Georgia—to the Western European and Byzantine space.The offered analysis will concentrate on the shared characteristics of European space in the Middle Ages and will compare them to the general tendencies of development of Georgia in the same period.This enables to draw conclusion that Georgia was the part of the unified Christian space of the early Middle Ages.

Elizabeth I:Gender and Paradigm1713-1720

摘要:Elizabeth I:Gender and Paradigm explores how Elizabeth I combined elements:male discourse,Elizabethan theatre,and the new Anglican church to maintain her power and rule for 45 years.The historical figure,Elizabeth,and her dramatic double,Rosalind,provide feminist studies with an insight into how British women of the 16th century used contemporary notions of masculinity and femininity to their advantage.Elizabethan studies and its contemporary plays offer examples of fluid gender identity used by females for safety,free speech,and self-determination.Elizabeth used the new Anglican church as divine validation for her rule and the fact that Elizabeth spoke directly to her people and her parliament and conducted international relations in at least six languages.Elizabeth I,and the theatre she so enjoyed,offer a dialectic for tracing the lineage of what is now referred to as feminism.

Using Information in Archives1721-1731

摘要:The information to be found in archives is generically called documents and these may take the form of:manuscripts,protocols,contracts,an individual’s or institution’s memoirs,photos,or maps.It can be accessed in archives and that falls under European or national legislation.The digitalization of archives is nowadays’trend and that allows for both quick access to information and its preservation in classical form.The transparency of archives is ensured via the opportunities granted to researchers to quickly find the information they need and multiply it.For archives to be studied by all those who take an interest in them it is mandatory to guarantee their right preservation and processing.Unfortunately,many archives in Romania do not respect the preservation conditions and hence some of the valuable documents,especially from the medieval period,can no longer be saved.This article focuses on the digitalization of archives and the conditions that have to be upheld in using documentary information.The analysis and interpretation of some documents in the archives along with the technique I employ lead to a manner of work that can be applied to other documents,as well,and thus,might prove useful for other researchers.

The Misconstruction of the Postmodern Curriculum at the Beginning of the 21st Century in Mainland China:From the Perspectives of Curriculum Culture1732-1746

摘要:The current paper contemplates a process of introducing the postmodernism in curriculum changes since the beginning of 21st century in China.During the 15 years,government sought to responding the rapid economic development and reducing the pressures of exam-oriented education,and then introduced the frames of postmodernism curriculum which went beyond the modernism stage of the curriculum development in China.The educational system had shown more intent to bring about change but has been hampered both by an inherited culture of inertia and lack of micro-culture in classroom,which led to the disconnection between the policy-making and the practices of implementation.

Innovation in Teaching:The Relativity of Educational Values in Vocational Training1747-1752

摘要:In the socio-professional environment,the existence of values proves to be essential to the individual in order to live in harmony.It is by the search of oneself that you discover the world around you.Under this aspect,the philosophy of education can contribute to the conveyance of a decisive reflection on the impact of the educator’s mission on the people who are taught.On the one hand,the relativity of values puts into question their universal dimension,since they diversify in place and time according to different eras but also to different customs of each country.In this case,what is the finality of education and learning in relation to cultural diversification with regard to innovation in teaching?On the other hand,the educator’s personality plays a considerable and effective role in motivating his/her target group to seek out the higher and universal values and disseminate the principles of citizenship.Lastly,with regard to vocational training,the introduction of diversified pedagogical approaches as well as the adoption of learning strategies will enable the Educator to act in full knowledge and awareness of his action while being preoccupied in the management of the pedagogical process.His/her effective intervention will offer the opportunity to the group members to create synergies,in order to develop their unexploited potential and achieve a high level of awareness through the development of their personality.

Pre-Qin Rhetoric and Its“Chinese”Characteristics1753-1761

摘要:The article explores some of the important features of pre-Qin Chinese rhetoric and challenges it poses to traditional Western rhetoric,with the former being seen as harmonic or self-effacing for its purpose and paradoxical for its epistemological underpinning.The author does not intend to suggest that the Chinese tradition is the right path to rhetoric,but at least it points to an alternative to approaching this language art as defined by Aristotle.

Translation of Discourse Context and Reconstruction of Textual Coherence in the Target Discourse1762-1770

摘要:Linguistic studies of context benefit translation a lot,as context is first accepted as a social linguistic concept in its long history of development.Obviously,context has become increasingly crucial for translation and translation studies.Some scholars even suggest that an independent contextual vision of translation be established to distinguish context of translation from those of text linguistics,pragmatics and cognitive linguistics,etc.It is a set of cohesive devices that constitute the coherence of a discourse.Some linguist classifies the devices into two groups:internal cohesive devices and external cohesive devices.Absolutely,each coherent discourse is contextually adapted and the thesis attempts to transplant context of translation into the soil of discourse,so that contextual elements can be categorized accordingly and translation process will be considered as reconstruction of textual coherence in the target discourse under the constraint of context.Therefore the translators should enhance their contextual awareness and internalize contextual knowledge into their minds in a bid for an effective translation.

A Typological Investigation into L2 Chinese“Prepositional Phrase-verb”Word Order Acquisition1771-1780

摘要:The study,using an interlanguage corpus,investigates how international students in China acquire“prepositional phrase-verb”word order.It found that students whose mother tongue features VO and OV word order mostly produce pre-placement structure of“prepositional phrase+verb”,which is similar to Chinese word order and hence reflects an overt influence of the target language.However,when producing post-placement structure of“verb+prepositional phrase”,VO type L1 speaking students slightly outnumber those OV type L1 speaking students,which indicates limited influence of L1 transfer.In addition,other factors such as the relator principle and the temporal iconicity principle also exert certain influence on the word order acquisition of“prepositional phrase-verb”structure.
