Orpheus and Eurydice's Myth Revisitedin Jennifer Egan's A Visit From The Goon Squad637-647

摘要:Rilke's Orpheus sonnet 27 runs, "Does it truly exist: time the destroyer? / When topples the tower atop the peacefulheight? / This heart belonging to the gods forever,/When will the demi-urge send it with dire might?" And it isprecisely on the destructing force of time that Jennifer Egan constructs her narrative upon. A Visit From the GoonSquad is exactly Orpheus and Eurydice's myth revisited, and she focuses on the tragedy of decline in 21 st centuryAmerica. A variety of characters unfulfilled lives conform the map of New York City, and Orpheus lyre hasbecome a rock and roll group, The Conduits, as a sort of misconnecting force in the lives of them all. A carefulliterary distance gives an impressionistic vision of inevitability and opportunity lost. My approach focuses on thedifferent interpretations of the classic myth, and on how Rilke's rhetorical questions offer an eclectic and metallicanswer in Jennifer Egan's contemporary view.

In Search of Identity in Language and Irish Geography:On Seamus Heaney's Wintering. Out648-655

摘要:Seamus Heaney in his lifespan of 74 years is lauded not only for his great accomplishment in the field of poetry, butalso for his translation, editing and literary criticism. Yet, when it comes to socio-political affairs, the poet is not aunanimous favorite. Far from being an influential political activist sometimes anticipated by his friends andcountrymen in Ireland, Heaney resorted to his search for identities and for answers to his nation's predicament inthe world of words. As a poetic collection published during the political unrest in the seventies, Wintering Outdiscloses Heaney's composition of the dialectic between the aesthetic and the historical. In this essay, the authorwill look into Heaney's four poems in the collection, in which the poet's linguistic as well as geographical survey ofhis hometown is indispensible for readers who intend to discern his attitude in the critical period of his artisticformation。

Infinite Regress and the Illusion of Actuality and Participationin Borges's The Aleph656-662

摘要:Borges wants his reader to use imagination to participate in his fiction, to imagine the vision of the universe as anAleph. The vision of the Aleph is paradoxical, impossible, inexpressible--a point in space, in the basement of ahouse in Buenos Aires, where all other points in the universe are simultaneously present. The reader sees theAleph--or the illusion of the Aleph, watching it emerge as if through Borges' own eyes, as an unrequited lover andfrustrated poet gradually accommodating the infinite vision to the limitations of actual perception. The illusion ofactual presence the reader evokes seems to include the reader as both a subject reading and an object in the vision. The reader mirrors himself in the enumeration as the reader imaginatively projects associations and expectationsinto the images in order to make sense of them. The reader tries to avoid involving himself in the vision, but theimages the writer presents the reader with are ambiguous, schematic, demanding intervention to try to resolveapparently unresolved contradictions by trying out the different interpretations that may make sense of them. Overand over again in reading the enumeration the reader encounters images that allow him to convert sequence intosimultaneity, part into whole. Other images suggest the presence of infinite, multiple, perspectives on each objectconverging in the Aleph and reveal insights into hidden designs and into secret interiors of structures. The visionthe reader reads must seem to exceed the limits of language and perception. Opposed to images of disintegrationand chaotic dispersal are microcosmic images that suggest a whole reflected or contained in its parts, worldsreflected within worlds by infinite regress. Infinite regress undermines the assumption of a subject and objectdichotomy in the act of reading and enhances the illusion of participation in the vision. Infinite regress, imagewithin image, world within world, is a symmetry that asserts itself against the illusion of the enumeration asapparently random a

Metaphors of Anorexia Analysis of Peony's Starved-for-loveSelf in Lisa See's Peony in Love663-669

摘要:In Asian American writer Lisa See's novel Peony in Love (2007), the love-sick maiden Peony commits anorexiawhich finally leads to her annihilation. Anorexia, as well as foot bonding, both of which are distortions of femalebody, convey various metaphors. The novel repeatedly presents the inability to eat or eating monotonous meals assymptoms of the nervous breakdown. Through a series of feminist psychological analysis, this paper is designed tofigure out these metaphors of anorexia within the text in the following three dimensions: anorexia as imitation of art, anorexia as failure in mother-daughter relationship and the anorexic female body as a language. After explanationsof the metaphorical meaning of anorexia, this paper aims to analyze Peony's starved-for-love self, and draw aconclusion about lovesickness during the whole process of Peony's maturation.

Reconstructing Qatari Heritage: Simulacra and Simulation679-693

摘要:Qatar today focuses so much on reconstructing its cultural heritage. It is clear that the reconstruction of Qatariheritage has stemmed from a nostalgic mood. Thus, the government subsumed that heritage into certaininterpretations and readings. Therefore, as presented today, Qatari heritage is no longer a self-referential heritage ofan indigenous culture. Rather, it has become a principle to reflect the social and economic existence of the Qataricommunity along with other global communities. The mass use of heritage and the implementation of Westernmuseum culture, however, might be viewed by some as the importation of a culture rather than the preservation ofan existing one. To minimise such potential problem, the government opted to ignore any distinctions betweenrepresenting heritage, interpreting it, or imposing new ideas and thinking around it. Instead, it has focused onintroducing a heritage based on linking images of foreign elements that characterise Qatari heritage with new socialand economic experiences.

Finally, the author willexamine Jonas Mekas's diary film--The Song of Avila as a case study, analyzing the relationship between thevoice-over and the images in this film by applying my concept of a parenthetical structure.

Is Seeing Believing?A Critical Analysis of Japanese Colonial Photographs of Korea722-747

摘要:In order to assess Roland Barthes' argument that interpretation of photography depends on cultural codes embeddedtherein, a collection of photos from the Japanese Government-General of Ch6sen (GGC), which controlled Korea1910-1945, were examined. These colonial images and associated text, commonly in English, were aimed primarilyat the West, with which the Japanese sought alignment. Of the three common categories of GGC photos, "scientific"or "anthropological" images corresponded with portrayals by Western colonial powers of the supposed inferiornature of subjugated peoples and cultures. Individuals in such pictures tend to lose their identities and are reducedto a stereotype, less human than the observer. "Before and after" photos depicted alleged GGC progress in suchareas as education and infrastructure. Pictures of "happy colonial subjects" conveyed an impression of Koreansenjoying the benevolence of the new administration. While this photojournalism favorably impressed someWesterners, others employed images of the 1919 Korean uprising, and its suppression, to discredit the Japanese. The overall assessment demonstrates the polemical manipulation of photography.

摘要:Peking Gazette (京報), the information of which was derived according to Di Bao (邸報), or Di Chao (邸抄), wasa sort of Chinese official papers and a main form to spread court information in Ming and Qing dynasty. Westernersrepresented by Britons who came to China had paid great attention to the Peking Gazette in the 19th Century. Andtheir interests in the Peking Gazette endued these traditional papers a new mission. British missionaries anddiplomats coming to China kept a tradition of translating and introducing the Peking Gazette in the 19th Century.Thomas Francis Wade is the key man in promoting the formation of the tradition. During the period of the SecondOpium War, Wade's interests in the Peking Gazette had promoted the role of the Peking Gazette to be transformedfrom the "information source" to the "negotiation method", and also greatly influenced the Sino-British powerrelationship in "Information Space" in the second part of the 19th Century.
