Performance in Caribbean and African Literatures as Subversion of the Colonial Order155-163

摘要:In the past oral Caribbean and African cultures, performances by the“griots”reminded the community of its heroic past.In colonial studies, performance is a way for the colonized people to reconnect with its original soul and language and to become magnificent of creativity like the storyteller Solibo in Chamoiseau’s Solibo Magnifique(Caribbean). In Chamoiseau’s novel, the Black policemen who came to investigate on Solibo’s sudden death during the performance look grotesque. They mimic the French colonizers with their“baton”and their racism at thinking evil of the Black community and they provoke laughter.Mimicry and the irony it conveys, subverts the formerly ironclad authority of the colonial order(Homi K.Bhabha in Location of Culture). The Cameroonian writer Werewere Liking-Gnépo also warns the Africans of the danger of wearing the White Mask of the colonizers(like Fanon in Black Skin,White Masks). She demonstrates in her Song/Novel She will be of Jasper and Coral, that while the African Mask empowers the performer of metaphysical powers, the White Mask of colonialism on the contrary weakens the performer who internalizes his inferiority and becomes complicit of his subjugation.Fortunately,Werewere Liking-Gnépo shows ithat the White Mask of colonialism can be used to mimic the harshness and corruption of the Colonial order and in doing so to bring back regeneration of Africa.

Corpus-based Contrastive Analysis of“Root”Metaphor Translation in Dream of the Red Mansion164-174

摘要:Both the study of metaphor and translation has taken an empirical turn in the past decade,corpus-based method has provided a practical and objective way for investigating metaphor translation from a comparative and cognitive perspective. The purpose of this paper is to reveal the cognitive differences in the perception of“root”between English and Chinese through a contrastive analysis of the two English translations of a Chinese classic novel—Dream of the Red Mansion, the two translations are completed by a native Chinese speaker and a native English speaker respectively. The study is divided into two parts, the first part is devoted to a contrastive analysis of typical examples selected from the data acquired from the online English-Chinese parallel corpus with the online corpus analysis tool Wmatrix, two deductions have been drawn through the analysis concerning the cognition difference in root perception:(1)the integral perception of root and a plant in Chinese VS the binary cognition in English;(2)the concreteness of“root”metaphor in Chinese VS the abstractness in“root”metaphor application in English. Then the two deductions are further demonstrated through corpus-assisted study of“root”metaphor in large online corpuses. The differences in root metaphor usage as well as the cognitive reasons behind the differences have been investigated with emphasis not only on the dominant conceptual root metaphors, but also the semantic preference of the collocated words of the metaphors.

The Constrained Self-Voice of the Female—On Fiona and Marian in“The Bear Came Over the Mountain”188-192

摘要:Fiona and Marian, the two female roles of Alice Munro’s short story“The Bear Came Over the Mountain”always catch little attention of the readers who instead pay more attention to the male protagonist Grant. In actuality, the two female roles share a common point which needs readers and critics to carefully analyze and re-evaluate.That is both female roles’self-voice which is constrained against the man-center traditional perspective. This essay just aims to reanalyze and elaborate the two female roles by using the methods and theories of feminist criticism in order to discover and release the constrained self-voice of the female.

Spacial Discipline in Carson McCullers’s The Ballad of the Sad Café204-208

摘要:Mainly applying Michel Foucault’s idea about spacial discipline plus gender studies,in particular,of the correlation between gender and space as well as the power hierarchy in the distribution of space, this paper analyzes the female protagonist Miss Amelia in Carson McCullers’s The Ballad of the Sad Café.This paper argues that Amelia utilizes space as a means of self-empowerment,challenging the conventional gender dichotomy sanctioned by patriarchal norms. However, her spacial transgression is seen as a deconstruction of gender conventionality and causes masculine crisis as embodied by the male characters Marvin Macy and Cousin Lymon. As spacial discipline is collaboratively exerted by Macy and Lymon on Amelia to“correct”her transgression,Amelia finally concedes defeat and submits to patriarchal gender norms.

Mitigation and Pragmatic Empathy209-220

摘要:In the pragmatics literature the relationship between mitigation and pragmatic empathy remains largely an underexplored,or even worse,a controversial issue, giving rise to the formulation of divergent views of empathy in mitigation. While I treat empathy as a working mechanism providing a general explanation of how mitigation works,Caffi(1999;2007;2013)adopts a“paradox”view on it.The purpose of this paper is to track down the sources of divergence by comparing and contrasting our conceptualizations of mitigation. It is found that the biggest difference lies in the treatment of intersubjectivity. However, although I argue in favor of my empathic view,I see it as complementary, rather than contradictory,to Caffi’s view. The relationship between mitigation and politeness is revisited with its implications for teaching pragmatics briefly discussed.

Early Christian Iconography in Raphael’s Disputà245-260

摘要:The theme of Raphael’s Disputàdel Sacramento(Disputation of the Holy Sacrament)has perplexed scholars over the years.Though the subject of theology has been mentioned,no one has shown in depth how the painting reflects theology or how the figures work together to present a unified theme on theology.Questions remain concerning the broader theological meaning of the Disputà.This study will reexamine the material and offer a deeper interpretation based on early Christian iconography and a study of figures from early Church history. From an early Christian point of view,it will be shown how the presence of specific figures in the Disputàexplain the Eucharistic tradition through apostolic succession since the time of the early Church.

B.Britten-orrelation Between the Realizations of H.Purcell's Orpheus Britannicus and the Vocal Cycle Sechs Holderlin-Fragmente op.61261-269

摘要:Henry Purcell(1659-1695)and Benjamin Britten(1913-1976)are the main figures in English musical culture.Britten was particularly inspired by Purcell’s illustrative approach to putting together music and text, thus creating fascinating connections between different historical and musical contexts. This paper will analyse and show the correlation between Britten’s realizations of Purcell’s setting of songs Orpheus Britannicus and the input in the original Britten’s vocal cycle Sechs H?lderlin-Fragmente op.61.The harmonious language of the songs and different thematic motives and their relationship will be considered. It will demonstrate that Britten’s songs were very much shaped by thematic structure, intervals like could be found in Purcell’s vocal music and they show the parallels between Britten’s realizations of Purcell’s songs and the input in the original Britten’s vocal music. The article presents the results of the analysis of a song cycle using the method of musical analysis of Rudolph Réti based on his understanding of a“thematic process”in music. The paper will use the case of Britten’s vocal cycle Sechs H?lderlin-Fragmente op.61(1958)to explain how this cycle is structured. The song cycle will be analysed from the perspective of cyclicity based on Réti’s theory of microtopicality explaining an organic cohesion between architectonics of composition and the parts of a vocalist and a pianist. It is argued that the cyclicity in the song cycle is created through the cross-links between the textual and musical dramaturgic lines and could be sayed about the realizations of Purcell’s Six Songs from Orpheus Britannicus(1943-45).First,the structure of the thematic motives(prime cells)in the setting of Britten’s realizations of Purcell’s Orpheus Britannicus Six Songs will be analysed and the deep connection in cyclicity will be considered.Second, the thematic motives(prime cells)in the realizations that are cross-linked with the original Britten’s vocal cycle Sechs H?lderlin-Fragmente op.
