Identity Crisis in Jean Rhys’ Wide Sargasso Sea Revisited109-121

摘要:This paper examines the identity crisis experienced by Antoinette in Jean Rhys’ Wide Sargasso Sea (1966) from a predominantly soci-psychological perspective. Since most of the critical attention regarding Wide Sargasso Sea has been devoted to external problems, such as race, gender and colonial politics, this article will concentrate on the psychological relevance of those issues, examining the reasons for the internal conflict and sharp divisions that torment the heroine. It investigates identity crisis faced by the novel’s heroine and her struggle to overcome this crisis in a society where woman is triply marginalized by race, class, gender and colonialism. It also traces Antoinette’s search and struggle for an independent life and examines the extent to which she succeeds or fails in articulating her identity. Special emphasis will be laid on Erik Erikson’s psychological theories of identity crisis and human development. The paper depicts the protagonist’s endeavour to overcome the external forces that impact the construction or destruction of her identity. Ultimately, Antoinette reaches a resolution on her own terms, depending on her own personal decision and the surrounding societal and cultural circumstances.

Getting Out: A Struggle for Autonomy in Physical and Social Confinement122-129

摘要:This study comprises an analysis of the American feminist playwright Marsha Norman’s play Getting Out from a socialist-feminist perspective. Getting Out is about the physical and psychological confinement of the victimized protagonist Arlie Holsclaw in contemporary patriarchal American society. Throughout the play, the factors that victimize Arlie are given as the outcomes of a patriarchal society with its basic institutions as the family, educational system, religion and the law symbolized by the correctional rehabilitation. These factors which are under the hegemony of patriarchal authority shape Arlie’s life as beginning from her childhood in the past and define her present search for female autonomy.

A Discursive Approach to Aporia in The Turn of the Screw130-139

摘要:Henry James’s The Turn of the Screw (1898) is a fascinating thriller that bewilders readers and critics alike for more than 100 years since its publication. Based upon the analytic frame of Bakhtin’s critical vision on conceptual horizons, and the double-voiced active discourse, this paper seeks to locate the recurrence of aporia through a tracing of the varied speakers and listeners in the text, and the varied discourses viewed from the stance of an implied author, for which all contribute to the cloudy effect of the novel. The author argues that conceptual horizons and double-voiced active discourse both possess the power of bringing about ambiguity in textual understanding. This study intends to broaden critics’ horizon and diversify the appreciation of this work.

Giorgio Vasari’s Fine Arts From the Vite of 1550:The Splendor of Creativity and Design140-178

摘要:Giorgio Vasari’s conception of artistic creativity is related to his theory of painting. He proposes two alternatives in a painter’s development or achievement of artistic creativity: imitation (imitazione) and invention (invenzione).Imitation is the copying of art as a method of learning, whereas invention is independent of imitation and constitutes the means for conceiving artistic ideas. Imitation serves to guide and teach the artist in composing and creating perfection. Vasari maintains that artists must study antiquity and the masters, so that they may learn how others acquired the experience of imitating nature. For Vasari, imitation draws upon three different sources: the first two are copying from nature (copia dal vero) and the third one is selecting from one’s work (imitare se stessi). He emphasizes that copying from nature is important for the artist so that he may learn to create forms that are alive as visualized in the Fine Arts.

The Representation(s) of “The Other”in Passage to India by David Lean179-185

摘要:This work presents a critical approach to Passage to India, a film directed by David Lean (1984), based on the novel written by Edward Morgan Foster in 1924, focusing attention on micro representations of Indian society under British imperial power. To structure the work, the ideas of two prominent thinkers whose critical approaches are grounded on the concept of Representation and its implication in relation to perceptions of the “Other” were we selected as theoretical framework, namely Herrieta Lidchi and Stuart Hall. In this way, the work aims at highlighting the power of visual images, represented by the film, in the construction of ethnocentric images created by Imperial power(s) and their importance for the development of critical thinking in relation to residual marks of such representations in post-colonial era.

Looking at the Effects of Language Contact With Hakka as Reflected by the Characteristics of the Pingshan Zhanmi Dialect186-194

摘要:The special Economic Zone of Shenzhen has been endowed with plentiful of language resources. Apart from various Yue dialects in the west and Hakka dialect in the east, there are also many indigenous Chinese dialects such as the Dapeng dialect (大鹏话), the Danjia dialect (疍家话) and also the Zhanmi dialect (占米话). The last one is not ever reported. Out of curiosity, we went to investigate the dialect which is spoken in isolate patches in the easternmost townships of Pingshan (坪山), Kengzi (坑梓) and Pingdi (坪地). The Pingshan Zhanmi dialect (PZD)seems to be an intermediate between Yue and Hakka dialects. According to our observation, PZD is quite similar to the Dongguan-Baoan Yue dialects (DBYD, 莞宝片粤语) in the western part of the city and has obvious correspondence with them, such as having the onset [m] in the Middle Chinese (MC) Wei (微) characters, little literal/colloquial discrepancies in the Fei Group (非组), [a/?] contrast, literal/colloquial readings in the Geng rime group all with [?/k] as codas, etc. However, because of long term contact with the surrounding Hakka dialects, PZD has also a lot of characteristics of Hakka, such as aspirated readings in all MC voiced stops and affricates onsetsafter devoicing, lack of rounded frontal vowels, no Ying-yang contrast in the Shang tone. More influences of Hakka can be found in the vocabulary, which PZD has been borrowing for centuries.

Who Are Hakka People?A Discussion of the Redistribution and Reco of the Hakka People in the Hakka Policies During Shui-Bian Chen’s Term as President195-200

摘要:This study discusses the contents and methods of the implementation of Hakka policies during Shui-Bian Chen’s term as president from the viewpoint of redistribution and recognition proposed by Nancy Fraser, and finds that the Hakka people mostly feel inferior and are not willing to identify themselves as Hakkas. The issue of “‘who’ are Hakka people” thus emerged during the implementation of the Hakka policies.

A Survey of Engagement, Subjectivity and Inter-subjectivity201-206

摘要:Engagement and subjectivity focus on the non-propositional meaning of discourse, and inter-subjectivity is concerned with the relationship between a writer/speaker and his potential readers/addressees. This article first introduces the definitions of engagement, subjectivity and inter-subjectivity, and then attempts to discuss the relationships among them. The analysis shows that subjectivity and inter-subjectivity are closely related and that the process of engagement is an interaction of speaking subject and his/her potential readers and social behavior of inter-subjectivity and social practice as well.

The Issue of Genealogy of Armenians, Georgians and Other Caucasian Nations in the Historiography of the Middle Ages207-225

摘要:The paper shows that the story about the origin of Armenians, Georgians and other Caucasians from a common ancestor, namely, from Targamos (Togormah)—The Life of the Fore-Patriarchs and Ancestors of the Georgian Kings, which is represented in the introductory part of The Georgian Chronicles and is dated back to the end of the11th, is a compiled work that mainly contains, on the one hand, an old Georgian genealogical-geographical story about Tarshish’s son Kartlos (Iber) and his six brothers ( Egros, Movakan, Heros, Bardos, Lekan and Caucas)created at the end of the 6th c.-first half of the 8th c. based on Byzantine works, and on the other hand, a genealogical story created in old Armenian historiography about Targamos and his son Hayk that went through certain steps of development as well. In the process of synthesizing, Togormah (Targamos) and his son Hayk (Haos)were inserted between Tarsish and his son Kartlos (Iber), which violated the Biblical scheme as well as the structure of the sentence in which the insertion was made. The goal of developing the synthesized scheme was to bring evidence of the common origin of Georgians and Armenians, as long as quite a large number of Armenians, because of the incorporation of a large part of Armenian territories within Georgian borders, became citizens of Georgia. At the same time, the story also offers a justification in the eyes of the Muslim world for the claims of Georgia for Armenian territories. According to the newly-created synthesized scheme, Georgia was “the successor brother” of Armenia(Haos//Hayk) and considering the absence of Armenian states, i.e., “the elder brother”,Georgia was the only legal heir of Armenian territories.

On Improvement of Teaching Quality for a Selected Mathematical Topic Using Artificial Neural Networks Modeling(With a Case Study)239-246

摘要:This paper motivated and inspired by an interdisciplinary critical educational issue adopted for a research work approach. It concerned with application of realistic Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) models integrating reading brain function with multi-sensory cognitive learning theory. Specifically, these models adopted to improve tutoring quality (academic achievement) while teaching children “how to read?” considering the analysis and evaluation of phonics methodology. Herein, quantitative analysis and evaluation of this issue performed by considering two computer aided learning (CAL) packages concerned with a specific selected mathematical topic namely: long division process. Via realistic modeling of packages using (ANNs) based upon associative memory learning paradigm. In more details, at educational field practice; both CAL packages have been applied for teaching children algorithmic steps performing long division processes. Moreover, learning performance evaluation of presented packages considers children outcomes’ achievement after tutoring for suggested Mathematical Topic either with or without associated tutor’s voice. Interestingly, statistical analysis of obtained educational case study results at children classrooms (for both applied packages) versus classical tutoring proved to be in well agreement with obtained after ANNs computer simulation results.
